Welcome! I am Dr. Prabhakar P. Swaroop, M.D., a board-certified gastroenterologist with over two decades of experience in clinical practice, research, and academic medicine. Throughout my career, my goal has been to provide compassionate, patient-centered care while staying at the forefront of advancements in gastroenterology. I specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of gastrointestinal disorders, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), acid reflux (GERD), liver diseases, and colorectal cancer.
Educational Background & Training
My journey in medicine began at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi, India, where I earned my M.B.B.S. Following this, I gained clinical experience as a House Officer in the Departments of Radiation Oncology and Neuroradiology at AIIMS. I then moved to the United States to complete my residency in Internal Medicine at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital Center, affiliated with Columbia University, in New York. I was honored to serve as Chief Resident during my final year.
To deepen my expertise in gastroenterology, I pursued a fellowship in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital, in Boston, Massachusetts under the supervision of Dr. Richard Blumberg, Dr. Norman Grace, Dr. Peter Banks and Dr. David L. Carr-Locke. My advanced training at these prestigious institutions gave me a strong foundation for both clinical practice and research in gastroenterology.
Professional Experience
Over the years, I have worked in various clinical and academic settings, honing my skills as a gastroenterologist and educator. After my fellowship in Gastroenterology and Hepatology, I joined St. Louis University, St. Louis, MO to start their division of Inflammatory Bowel Disease. I worked there for 4 year before moving to Dallas where I served as an Assistant and later Associate Professor of Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. I directed the Clinical IBD Program and co-chaired the North Texas Chapter of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA). I also held key roles, such as Medical Director of the Digestive and Liver Diseases Clinic at UT Southwestern.
Currently, I practice at Arizona Digestive Health ( ADH) at our Scottsdale location. My previous roles also include serving as a gastroenterologist at Staff Gastroenterologist at Honor Health, Arizona Adobe Gastroenterology in Tucson and Hutchinson Clinic in Kansas. These diverse experiences have allowed me to connect with a wide range of patients and develop personalized care plans to meet their unique health needs.
Research & Philosophy of Care
In addition to patient care, research has been a significant part of my career. I have contributed to studies on IBD, liver disease, and colorectal cancer prevention, and have presented at various national and international conferences. My research aims to improve the understanding of GI diseases and discover innovative treatments that can enhance patients’ quality of life.
I believe that empowering patients with education is key to successful healthcare. I am committed to fostering a collaborative relationship with my patients, ensuring they feel informed and involved in their care. Whether treating complex GI conditions or guiding patients through preventive care, my goal is to provide comprehensive and compassionate care. If I have seen you as a patient, do take time to put in a review about me.
Beyond Medicine
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family and our Goldendoodle, Biscuit. “ He’s something else” describes him quite aptly. I am passionate about promoting a healthy lifestyle through good nutrition and exercise and enjoy exploring new cuisines and cultures in my free time. I also write a blog about vegetarian foods.
I love to hike, paint acrylics and film photography and if I get an opportunity, I practice my guitar. I still nurse the hope of being the next Stevie Ray Vaughn! I have training in Indian Classical Music and have played the Tabla semi-professionally.
Thank you for visiting my website. I look forward to helping you achieve better digestive health and well-being.
